Week of December 25-31, 2005:
FOW -- Corey Alarcon, for his 56-second loss to Marvin Cordova. (The Pueblo Chieftain reported that it was a pair of jabs that floored Alarcon twice and finished him off. This defeat came not only on the heels of Alarcon's 3rd-round TKO loss in an IBU title fight back in November -- in which he barfed in his corner between the second and third rounds in addition to getting penalized a point for holding and dropped five times -- but also after (according to this report) he shoved Cordova at the weigh-in and informed him that "You're just a boy, I'm going to teach you to box like a man!" To top it all off, this fight served as the main event on a card that was brought to the world by "JewBoy Promotions."
Dishonorable mention -- None.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Jozef Kubovsky.
Week of December 18-24, 2005:
FOW (coming to you this week from the "it pays to be Venezuelan" department) -- Leo Gamez, for engaging in (and losing) yet another WBA title fight. Seventeen of Gamez's last nineteen bouts have been for some form of a WBA title, despite the fact that he has gone 7-9-1 in those title fights, and has won zero of the last five dating back to March of 2001. (A special shout out to Leo's friends at the WBA is in order here too, of course.)
Dishonorable mention -- Rolando Navarette, who, according to a Fightnews report, punched a Filipino tricycle cab driver in the mouth this week after the driver declined to give him a lift, due to the fact that he already had a passenger.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Ernie Smith, Karl Taylor.
Week of December 11-17, 2005:
FOW -- Masayuki Koguchi, for getting his wig knocked off his head in the middle of a fight. As Joe Koizumi reported: "During this contest the crowd watched an unbelievable happening. Koguchi, a handsome upright stylist, kept boxing beautifully like Gentleman Jim Corbett until the fourth round, when his well-made wig was almost detached out of the skull. His cornerman roughly stripped him of the wig during the recess, and Koguchi, a bald man, went out fighting from the fifth round. Jim Corbett abruptly turned Bob Fitzsimmons. The crowd was at first stunned and then burst into laughter."
Dishonorable mention -- Nicely-named Thomas Bastard for losing his unbeaten record to the closest thing to a .500 fighter he had yet to face, Dmitriy Salita for getting floored by and barely beating Robert Frankel, and Gabriel Botos for once again losing to Patrik Hruska.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Jorge Ortiz, Karl Taylor, Billy Smith, Jozef Kubovsky, Peter Buckley, Howard Clarke, Anton Glofak.
Week of December 4-10, 2005:
FOW -- Denis De Barros: Fightnews reported that "In the main event of the evening, EBA super welter champ Attila Kovács...scored a suspicious second round TKO over Dennis De Barros....In the first round, De Barros constantly tried to escape and did nothing. The referee deducted one point from the Brazilian because he ran away and didn't throw any punches. In the second round, Barros suddenly touched his belly and gave up. The Brazilian's trainer urged De Barros to go on and fight but De Barros declined."
Dishonorable mention -- Giulian Ilie for reportedly getting busted for fighting with a fake license, bumkiller Robert Isaszegi for his blatant tank job in an EBU title fight, Anton Kubov, for continuing his campaign for "Worst Boxer of the Decade" honors by turning in a KO loss to 67-fight loser Vladimir Varhegyi, Jimmy "Raggedy Mouth" Garrett for returning to action with a knockout loss of his own, 19-0 heavyweight David Rodriguez for having the gall to take on 0-1 Brandon Quigley, Palo Garaj for drawing with 4-36-4 Anton Lascek in his pro debut, Jose Claudio Da Silva for earning his 40th career loss in a failed bid to win the Brazilian 154-lb. title (in addition to losing 100-85 on one of the scorecards), and Marival Sobral Sobrinho and Carlos Alberto, who were disqualified for kicking and "not fighting," respectively, on the same spectacular card that Da Silva appeared on.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Dave Hinds, Paul Bonson, Stefan Berza.
Week of November 27 - December 3rd, 2005:
FOW -- Ex-IBF 175-lb. champion William Guthrie (30-3), for drawing with 7-14-5 Rodney Moore.
Dishonorable mention -- Ariel Gerardo Aparicio, for getting docked three points for constant holding in the first four rounds of his fight against Chad Bennett, and going on to lose by a score of 119-102 on one of the judges' cards, Alejandro Bogarin for suffering a 60-second, one-punch KO loss on Telefutura to Terry Wright, who had not won a bout since 1997, and 11-3 Manuel Quezada for losing to 3-16-4 David Johnson. (It should also be noted that Johnson is apparently a former WBE Super Heavyweight champion.)
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Jorge Ortiz, Kevin "Dog Pound" Carter (twice in three days), Peter Simko, Ernie Smith, Peter Buckley, Howard Clarke, Billy Smith.
Week of November 20-26, 2005:
FOW -- 15-0 Bobby Aucoin, for hitting his opponent four times after having dropped him to the canvas, and still getting declared the winner of the fight. According to the Gulf Coast Boxing report, Aucoin "captured the biggest win of his career as he scored [a] 4th round KO over Travis Hartman (5-3-1). Hartman was in control of the bout and he had Aucoin backing down and looking confused. But with 1:40 left in the 4th round, Aucoin countered Hartman with a straight right hand. Hartman went down to one knee, and Aucoin hit Hartman four times while he was still on his knee, the blows put[ting] Hartman face down on the canvas." The referee just went ahead and counted Hartman out anyway, awarding the fight to Aucoin.
Dishonorable mention -- Numerous fighters on the November 26th Ft. Smith, Arkansas card who lost their fights in about a minute or less, and Corey Alarcon, who not only went down five times and lost a point for holding in an IBU title fight back in November, but, according to the above-mentioned Gulf Coast Boxing report, produced the "highlight of the bout" when he vomited in his corner between rounds two and three.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Paul Bonson, Peter Buckley, Ernie Smith, Dave Hinds, Jason Nesbitt (to Nadeem Siddique), Billy Smith, Stefan Stanko, Anton Glofak, Howard Clarke, Mihai Stan.
Week of November 13-19, 2005:
FOW -- Americo Santos, 23-0 entering the week, for getting absolutely throttled live on Showtime by Marteze Logan.
Dishonorable mention -- Colombian Ivan Hernandez, now 22-2, for his highly unimpressive effort in his Telefutura-televised loss to Ubaldo Hernandez (who had won only one of his last ten bouts going in), and former FOW Rafael Butler for getting destroyed by another journeyman.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Ernie Smith, Billy Smith (to Nadeem Siddique), Gabriel Botos, Verdell Smith.
Week of November 6-12, 2005:
FOW -- 47-5-1 Steve Martinez for getting blown out in 40 seconds by Alfonso Sanchez. Sanchez had scored one win in the last eight years going into the fight, and had last been seen getting demolished in one round by Eleazar Contreras on Telefutura in September.
Dishonorable mention -- Ryan Gronvold for getting floored by Jim Kaczmarek, Jose Claudio Da Silva for recording his 31st consecutive loss by losing to Giovanni Andrade for the third time in three years, and Aporosa Maya for apparently being declared the TKO loser of his fight against former FOW Temo Kolitapa when he came out for round two barefoot.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Karl Taylor, Howard Clarke, Jason Nesbitt, Dave Hinds.
Week of October 30 - November 5, 2005:
FOW -- Everyone who lost on the Auburn Hills, MI show on November 4th. The list includes: Joe Johnson (KO'd in 37 seconds, 60 day suspension), Celeste Jackson (23 seconds, 60 day suspension), Kevin Butts (22 seconds, 60 day suspension), and Emanuel Steward-trained ex-prospect Octavio Lara (loser of an SD6 to a 7-5 guy). (Also, Aaron Pryor Jr. was scheduled to appear on this card, but wisely elected not to show up.)
Dishonorable mention -- 77-time loser Anthony Ivory for getting KO'd in 20 seconds by Marco Antonio Rubio (and Rubio for taking the fight), Thai cruiserweight Turbo Or Khunthorn for having that name, and Kongtoranee NoinaiSportschool for getting knocked out by Sing Carryboy.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Billy Smith, Benji Singleton.
Week of October 23-29, 2005:
FOW -- Jean Claude Bikoi: Not to be outdone by the likes of Ondrej Berki and John Davidson, the 7-1 Bikoi was disqualified this week in round four of his fight against 2-61 (yes, 2-61) Frank Wuestenberghs for an unknown infraction. (At this moment, Bikoi, who hails from Cameroon, is still penciled in to fight a .500 Hungarian fighter for the "International Championship Luxembourg" in early December.)
Dishonorable mention -- Derrick Gainer, for getting arrested on a second-degree misdemeanor theft charge after allegedly refusing to pay a $4 parking fee at a fair in Pensacola, and Alvin Smith for losing in 19 seconds on a card in Missouri. (Smith's three career bouts have lasted a grand total of 86 seconds.)
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Ernie Smith.
Week of October 16-22, 2005:
FOW -- Bash Ali, for the unbelievable interview he gave to a Nigerian newspaper this week. In it, he announced that "[t]he best boxer in the world right now is Bash Ali. After him, we can talk of someone like Prince Naseem Hamed," and outlined his plans to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest boxer in history to hold a "world title" by fighting Jim Strohl in Nigeria for the WBF cruiserweight belt, a bout which Ali believes is worth $10 million: "I am ready to put up $2.1 million of my own, and I believe the government of Nigeria can put up the rest of the money...[F]or a fight that would put the name of Nigeria in the record books, I think it's peanuts....I can go to America tomorrow and fight for Don King, and he would probably guarantee me the sum of $10 million as my purse." (Strohl, nicknamed "Steel Chin," was last seen getting KO'd in 6 by Rob Calloway, and in 2003 was stopped by Cedric Boswell in five rounds, and Calvin Brock in one. Ali, who meanwhile has been beating up on opponents with names like Ogbologba Oyibogo and Ibrahum Shittu, also makes many other incredible statements in the interview, such as: "Jim Strohl has been described as the new 'Rocky Marciano' and all that. But I know that if the fight goes the distance, I'm going to beat him....After this, I intend to move to super cruiserweight and then on to heavyweight, and drop the boxing gloves to move ahead with my ambition of becoming the President of Nigeria.")
Dishonorable mention -- George Hillyard, for getting beaten by 12-87-5 Ernie Smith, and Jameel McCline for losing to Zuri "0 KOs" Lawrence. (One judge went so far as to score the bout a 100-90 loss for McCline.)
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Dave Hinds, Jason Nesbitt, Howard Clarke, Billy Smith, Michael Pinnock.
Week of October 9-15, 2005:
FOW -- Ondrej Berki, now 0-4, for continuing the recent worldwide string of horrific ring performances by losing TKO1 to 2-37-1 Gabriel Botos.
Dishonorable mention -- Former Audley Harrison opponent Mike Middleton for going down three times in two-and-half-minutes in his first-round KO loss to Nate Tubbs, who was having his first fight in over seven years.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Billy Smith, Verdell Smith, Peter Buckley, Jozef Kubovsky, Reggie Strickland (to Dante Craig).
Week of October 2-8, 2005:
FOW -- Gabor Czinke, for his loss to the immortal Laszlo Paszterko. The loss was especially notable because it marked at least the fifth time in under three months that Czinke, whose boxing career coincidentally began about three months ago, lost either on an LP-promoted card, on a card that took place at the LP Gym, to an LP-managed fighter, or to LP himself. (In related news, Miklos Toldi accomplished the same feat for the fourth time in three months at the same show.)
Dishonorable mention -- Danny Wofford, for surfacing in Tennessee for the second time this year, this time to suffer a decision loss to the amazing Jeff Holcomb, Mark Chang for recording a win over Lupe Gutierrez, who was having just his second bout in over eleven years, and Jose Luis Castillo for the well-documented controversy surrounding the weigh-in for his fight against Diego Corrales.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Verdell Smith, Ernie Smith, Paul Bonson, Reggie Strickland, Donnie Penelton.
Week of September 25 - October 1, 2005:
FOW -- John Davidson, who may have sewn up Fighter of the Decade honors this week by dropping a decision to 0-24 Billy Smith. (In his only other career fight, in 2004, Davidson was KO'd in 79 seconds by 4-45 Jason Nesbitt.)
Dishonorable mention -- Kevin "Dog Pound" Carter, for losing on back-to-back days in South Carolina and Georgia, and Lincoln Luke for his woeful performance against Chazz Witherspoon. (Fightnews reported that "Luke, who brought in a 45-pound weight advantage, proved that weight can also be a disadvantage as he was in no shape to fight. Out of breath within the first minute of the round, Luke forced the fight into a sloppy mess as he staggered around the ring....In the second round, Chazz connected with a stiff right jab that knocked Luke down for an eight-count. Upon rising, Luke was deemed not able to safely continue....Luke, still with little birdies flying around his head, reacted with class, twice pushing Holmes in protest before Ballroom security entered the ring to restore order.")
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Ernie Smith, Howard Clarke, Nesbitt.
Week of September 18-24, 2005:
FOW -- Brenda Drexel, for tipping the scales at 184 pounds at the weigh-in for her 140-lb. fight against Mia St. John's favorite opponent, Janae Archuleta. WBAN's reporter wrote that "Drexel told WBAN that [when] she left for Colorado, she thought she weighed 155 lbs, and that she would drop the weight before the weigh-in. I asked her how she would go from 155 to 140 the same day she arrived, but she did not have a ready answer."
Dishonorable mention -- China Smith for getting KO'd by Ed Mahone, and a special shout out to IBU president Don "Moose" Lewis for getting arrested at an airport in Trinidad and Tobago. Promoter Buxom Potts explained to the Trinidad Express that Moose "came here to sanction five world title fights and bring five international belts....He got paid for four and we still owe him something for one. He gave Iva Weston a belt and took it back. He tried the same thing with Teressa Perozzi, but she was having none of that. I felt he did not have the belts he promised, and I wanted the police to investigate."
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Peter Buckley, Gabriel Botos, Paul Bonson.
Week of September 11-17, 2005:
FOW -- Fijian boxer Temo Kolitapa, who was declared the TKO loser of his fight against Hemaloto Kaihea when he left the ring at the end of round six "to answer nature's call."
Dishonorable mention -- Julio Cesar Chavez, for paying his originally announced opponent Craig Weber to go home, and then quitting against the newly-appointed victim Grover Wiley, Malcolm Tann, for losing to some 5-3-1 guy, DeMarcus Corley for taking on a guy who had lost thirteen straight fights and allowing him to last nine rounds, Mike Dobbs, for getting KO'd in 31 seconds in a WBE title fight, Christy Martin and Johnny Tapia for getting blown out by God-knows-who, William Joppy for getting charged with first-degree assault after allegedly reaching into Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan's car, trying to choke him, and then ramming into Sugar Poo's car multiple times with his own vehicle, Christian Bladt for taking on a 4-26 fighter, and Geir Inge Jorgensen for (a) fighting again, (b) fighting somebody like Patrik (5-20-3) Prokopecz, (c) having such an unsightly new homepage, and (d) admitting on the homepage that "I won my 22. match this saturday evening against Patrik Prokopecz on points over 8 rounds. I'd planed to go as many rounds as posible before trying to knock him down, but it didn't exactly turn out the way I wanted."
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Billy Smith, Karl Taylor, Dave Hinds, Imrich Parlagi, Peter Batora (lasted 34 seconds), Jozef Kubovsky, Benji Singleton.
Week of September 4-10, 2005:
FOW -- Cameron Dunkin-managed former US amateur champion David Rodela, for getting KO'd by a 4-3 fighter on the Morales-Raheem undercard.
Dishonorable mention -- None.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Dave Hinds, Jason Nesbitt, José Carlos Amaral, Mihai Stan, Ernie Smith.
Week of August 28 - September 3, 2005:
FOW -- Steve Russell, for getting fought to a draw by legendary 85-time loser Arv Mittoo. Mittoo, who was 1-48-1 in his previous 50 contests and therefore perhaps in shock over the result, immediately announced his retirement in the ring after the fight. (BritishBoxing.net reported that this provoked 'a good ovation from the crowd who had earlier been chanting "You've got a pineapple on your head" at the Birmingham fighter.')
Dishonorable mention -- Giovanni Andrade, who won yet another local title by KO'ing a guy having his second fight in about three-and-a-half years, and Leonard Cretu, billed as a Romanian junior champion, for getting dropped twice and stopped in two rounds in his pro debut.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Csaba Oláh, Paul Bonson, Peter Buckley, Howard Clarke.
Week of August 21-27, 2005:
FOW -- Stevie Robinson for returning to action after a thirteen-year layoff and getting outpointed by 22-82-4 Jim Kaczmarek. (This is Kaczmarek's second straight win. In April 2004 he won a unanimous decision over Terry Christian, who was having his first fight in eleven-and-a-half years.)
Dishonorable mention -- 21-1 Oscar Diaz, for deciding to duck his originally announced opponent Emanuel Augustus and take on 9-2-1 Thomas Davis instead. (Diaz lost a point for slugging Davis after the bell to end the first, but went on to win 96-93 and 97-92 x 2.)
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Jozef Kubovsky.
Week of August 14-20, 2005:
FOW -- Ambroz Horvath, now 0-7, for losing KO1 to 4-19-3 Patrik Prokopecz. (Prokopecz thus posts his second win in approximately a month; the losers of those bouts were a combined 2-62-6 going in.)
Dishonorable mention -- Marco Angel Perez for his, to say the least, very uninspired effort against Juan Lazcano, and Robert Zsemberi, owner of four wins over 0-24 Zoltán "Julius" Horváth, for dropping a decision to 0-10-1 Marek Moticka.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Gabriel Botos, Csaba Oláh (in a fight where he was docked a point for "serious holding").
Week of August 7-13, 2005:
FOW -- Clifford Etienne: "The Black Rhino" (while already on parole for one armed robbery conviction) was arrested this week after police said that he "held up a check cashing business, fired a shot when a clerk failed to move fast enough and pulled a gun on officers as he tried to carjack two different vehicles with children inside." (He was charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, and two counts each of armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping.)
Dishonorable mention -- Monte "2 Gunz" Barrett, for losing a wide unanimous decision to Hasim Rahman after declaring in a Boxingtalk chat session that "Hasim Rahman has never fought somebody like 2 guns...I am ready to cock and reload, then explode on his ass," and Romulo Teixeira for getting disqualified in the first round of his fight against Edgar Da Silva for kicking his opponent. (A photo of the kick is available here.)
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Jozef Kubovsky.
Week of July 31 - August 6, 2005:
FOW -- Bradley Thompson for following up his May KO loss to IBU titleholder "Bad" Chad Broussard with a majority decision loss to 15-65-1 Jerry Smith. It was Smith's third win (against 46 defeats) since 1993. (Two weeks after the loss to Smith, Thompson was again KO'd by Broussard, who this time added the Louisiana State Light Middleweight title belt to his collection with the win.)
Dishonorable mention -- Bumkiller Giovanni Andrade, for scoring yet another win over some nobody to pick up yet another Brazilian title belt.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Peter Batora, Vladimir Varhegyi.
Week of July 24-30, 2005:
FOW -- Jorge Kahwagi, for recording a "win" over the less-than-effortful Roberto Coelho which looked so bogus that (a) bottles and cans were being thrown into the ring before the fight had even ended (with one can landing right in front of Coelho as he took the final count), (b) guards were required to surround the ring to prevent the spectators from storming it, and (c) the president of the local boxing commission publicly urged Kawaghi to retire from boxing "for the good of this sport and out of respect for the fans." (Jorge thus picks up his second career FOW award.)
Dishonorable mention -- DeMarcus Corley and William Joppy for taking on a pair of opponents who were a combined 17-79-3, and Jesus "Bam Bam" Arboleda, who in his pro debut this week was docked a point when he punched his opponent after the referee had told the two fighters to touch gloves.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Paul Bonson, Jason Nesbitt, Peter Buckley, Karl Taylor, Jorge Ortiz.
Week of July 17-23, 2005:
FOW -- Good old Anton Glofak, now 2-57-6, for getting KO'd in two rounds by 3-19-3 Slovak Patrik Prokopecz.
Dishonorable mention -- Steve Bettino for losing in 63 seconds to 0-8 Tyree Tidwell (Fightnews reported that "Steve appeared to be a individual who had never so much as sparred a round in his life as Tidwell easily dropped him three times in the opening round with less than devastating combinations. Steve showed no boxing skills, although he did possess a rare knack for turning around and cringing every time Tidwell threw a punch"), and 335-pound Julian Childress for hitting the canvas seven times (three official knockdowns, four "unofficial" visits) in his first-round KO loss to Charles Ellis.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Anton Lascek, Jose Claudio Da Silva, Billy Smith, Ernie Smith, Vladimir Varhegyi.
Week of July 10-16, 2005:
FOW -- 25-2 Spaniard Jose Maria Guerrero, owner of a win over Carlos Rocha Tomar, for getting KO'd in three rounds by 4-5-1 Georgian Mamuca Khuhasvilly. (This appears to have been Khuhasvilly's first fight in nearly four years.)
Dishonorable mention -- The apparently-related Mike Krull and legendary RSB poster Ron "Poorboy" Krull for suffering KO losses on the same card in Indiana, and Darrett Crockett for losing a decision to 8-46-1 "Dog Pound" Carter, in a fight that may have been judged by bumkilling heavyweight extraordinaire Don Steele.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Reggie Strickland.
Week of July 3-9, 2005:
FOW -- Nathan Wilkes, now 0-12, for his DQ loss to Jimmy "The Fightin' School Teacher" Holmes on another one of those fine Indiana cards. CBZ reported: "Following a sustained attack by Holmes, Wilkes--who had been pinned to the ropes--grabbed Holmes at the base of his buttocks and--in a move very much like a football drill--lifted and drove Holmes across the ring, tackling him onto the ropes. Referee Kurt Spivey had seen enough, disqualifying Wilkes at 2:27 into round four."
Dishonorable mention -- Hector Camacho Sr. for brawling with his opponent after the final bell and inciting a near-riot on a card in Tucson (story and photos available here), and previously undefeated two-time Olympian Eromosele Albert for getting floored twice by, and losing a unanimous decision to, 6-5-1 Julio Jean on an Andre Purlette undercard.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Michael Pinnock, Verdell Smith, Lee "The Quickster" Cargle, Howard Clarke, Ernie Smith, Paul Bonson, Arv Mittoo.
Week of June 26 - July 2, 2005:
FOW -- Floyd Trumpet, who, in the co-featured bout on Solo Boxeo, managed to get docked a point for holding within the first two minutes of the fight, then capped off his extremely uninspired effort by staggering halfway across the ring and leaning on the ropes after taking a pair of not-too-hard-looking lefts to the head. (Trumpet then stood where he was and stared at the referee until the fight was waved off at the 2:16 mark, whereupon he returned to his corner and inexplicably began wailing the words "NO WAY" repeatedly.)
Dishonorable mention -- O'Neil "Big Red" Murray, for getting dropped twice and taking a standing-eight count en route to a 67-second TKO loss, and Suoyai Muaythaiplaza 2004 and Radar Sethpeth in for losing while having those names.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Karl Taylor, Lee "The Quickster" Cargle, Arv Mittoo, Csaba Oláh.
Week of June 19-25, 2005:
FOW -- Jaime Vargas (now 1-13), who accomplished the nearly-unthinkable in losing to 0-36-3 Colombian Jorge Ortiz.
Dishonorable mention -- 10-2 Sean Hughes, who (thanks to Vargas) narrowly missed out on FOW honors when he was floored and fought to a draw by Peter Buckley, thus ending Buckley's 37-fight losing streak, K.C. Truesdale for losing to 11-14-1 John Battle by scores of 80-68 on all cards, and Benji Singleton for picking up his 100th recorded career loss.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Jozef Kubovsky, Billy Smith, Ernie Smith,
Week of June 12-18, 2005:
FOW -- Richard Mazurek, 5-0-1 entering the week, for losing to 11-82-4 Ernie Smith. (After going winless 29 times in a span of 30 fights, Smith has now somehow lost only three times in his last six outings.)
Dishonorable mention -- Let's Go Ryoji for obvious reasons.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Billy Smith, Howard Clarke, Donnie Penelton, Paul Bonson, Lee "The Quickster" Cargle.
Week of June 5-11, 2005:
FOW -- 44-10 "Fatal" Fred Ladd, who derailed the FOW hopes of Mike Tyson by losing a decision to 13-49-1 Lester Yarbrough. Yarbrough had lost 37 consecutive fights dating back over a period of FOURTEEN YEARS and nine months. (Ladd thus becomes a prime candidate for 2005 Fighter of the Year honors.)
Dishonorable mention -- Tyson, for not only quitting against Kevin McBride but allegedly biting McBride's nipple (McBride said that "I didn't realize it at first but he had his teeth around it. I just felt a strange sensation and then realized what he'd done. He could not get up high enough to bite my ears -- good job he wasn't a midget, otherwise he would have bitten something else"), and Jose Claudio Da Silva for running his record to 0-26 in his failed bid to win the Brazilian Santa Catarina State Lightweight Title.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Dave Hinds, Stefan Stanko, Lee "The Quickster" Cargle.
Week of May 29 - June 4, 2005:
FOW -- Lamar "Tree Top" Long: Boxingtalk's ringside reporter declared that "[i]n all my years of boxing, never have I seen anything as strange or as frightening as Lamar Long's ring entrance....From the dressing room, there was a sudden rumble, and then Long appeared, a chainsaw alive in his hands that sent fumes into the crowd and gas dripping onto the soiled, concrete floor. Ropes and chains were looped tightly around his body, as he revved his weapon. I blinked, feeling as though I was in a haunted house instead of a boxing venue." Long then proceeded to attack opponent Keith McKnight prior the opening bell, before getting himself knocked out in two rounds. (The entire Boxingtalk report is well worth reading, as is the promoter's post-event press release.)
Dishonorable mention -- Previously undefeated bumkiller Frankie Zepeda for getting KO'd on national TV by 21-7 Aldo Valtierra.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Donnie Penelton, Jason Nesbitt, Billy Smith, Ernie Smith, Jozef Kubovsky, Manuel Fatima Dias, Stefan Berza, Peter Buckley.
Week of May 22-28, 2005:
FOW -- British middleweight Davey Jones, for drawing with 11-81-3 Ernie Smith. Smith had gone 1-27-2 in his previous 30 bouts and has three career losses to 141-time loser Brian Coleman. (As an added bonus, the referee and sole judge of the Jones/Smith contest was none other than Dean Bramhald, a former boxer with 106 professional losses of his own.)
Dishonorable mention -- Joel Avila, for impersonating a 2-10 Filipino fighter (complete with fake passport and everything) in losing a WBC regional title fight to Medgeon Singsurat, previously unbeaten Mauro Ordiales for getting crushed in 56 seconds by Luis Pineda, and Adam Wynant, who lost his pay-per-view-televised fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 42 seconds when, after taking a series of blows, he turned halfway around, eyed the canvas for a moment, and then just went ahead and helped himself to a seat on it.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Peter Buckley, Howard Clarke, Verdell Smith.
Week of May 15-21, 2005:
FOW -- "Rick" James Rice: In round four of the 6-42-5 Rice's fight against Ruben Galvan, according to the CBZ report, "Galvan knocked Rice's mouthpiece out, Rice froze momentarily and Galvan pounced with both hands jarring Rice's head hard. Angered, Rice grabbed Ruben beneath the buttocks and tried to throw him." (The referee ended up disqualifying both Rice and Galvan for multiple infractions.)
Dishonorable mention -- None.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Ernie Smith, Jozef Kubovsky, Tibor Horvath, Lee "The Quickster" Cargle.
Week of May 8-14, 2005:
FOW -- Jose Celaya, who weighed himself on an unofficial scale prior to his bout against James Webb, and, believing that he needed to lose one more pound to make weight, spent an hour the day before the fight running it off, only to discover when he stepped on the official scales that he had never needed to lose any more weight to begin with. (Celaya was then knocked out by Webb in eight rounds to pick up his second career FOW award.)
Dishonorable mention -- James Toney for failing his post-Ruiz fight drug test and getting stripped of the WBA heavyweight belt, and extreme bumkiller Nadeem Siddique for running his record to 14-0 with a KO win over a 1-10 guy.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Ernie Smith, Jozef Kubovsky, Lourival da Silva, Dave Hinds, Michael Pinnock.
Week of May 1-7, 2005:
FOW -- Marco Antonio Duarte: After Durate lost TKO3 to Emmanuel Davi, his wife decided to protest the stoppage of the bout by jumping into the ring and pummeling referee Norberto Polimeno. (Polimeno has apparently decided to sue Mrs. Duarte for her actions.)
Dishonorable mention -- None.
High-profile tomato cans who also lost -- Reggie Strickland, Stefan Berza, Anton Glofak, Ed Humes.
